Kedai Satay

The name Kedai Satay is a familiar one to Indonesians in Melbourne as a reliable CBD joint for those who miss Indonesian cuisine or students living in the inner city who feel lazy to cook dinner one night. Or a place to meet friends for dinner before a football match at Etihad Stadium.

Today I was craving one of the specialties of my hometown of Jakarta, yes Soto Betawi (a beef based broth). My daughter chose a dish for which Palembang city is famous – pempek or fish cakes in spicy marinade. We wanted to try some sweet options on the menu – on previous visits my daughter had introduced a friend to es alpukat-a sweet concoction of milk and avocado-but Kedai Satay does not have coffee, which I like with dessert. This place is casual and informal and like many Indonesian places the service is rather stiff and lacking smiles. But as for the taste, Kedai Satay serves up a cheap and pretty good meal.
