Tahini

When it’s weekday lunch peak hour in this Melbourne CBD eatery, suit-clad men and women join a steady queue for takeaway. Or they sit on the communal benches around the kitchen, to enjoy full table service. Tahini’s produce is fresh and its servings generous. We shared a soufra for one (a choice of two items from the grill plus hommus, tabbouleh and a felafel piece-as the soufra size increases so do the number of accompaniments). Our grill picks were the prawn, which came with toum – a garlic dip that was both hair-raisingly pungent and oh so good – and out of this world tender lamb ribs.

For entrees we ordered warm warrak areesh (vine leaves), and the haloumi fries (yes, really) as a side. Wash everything down with a Lebanese mocktail of jallab (rosewater syrup) garnished with pine nuts and a date, and-because this place is run by the same folk who own Code Black-superlative coffee.

    1. In between a kebab shop and high end Lebanese. Serving sizes are very generous though so if you’re with a friend sharing is the way to go!
