Persian Flavours

We’ve never tried Persian food; coincidentally there is a Persian halal restaurant not far from where I live. From the outside it looks like two separate shopfronts, in fact the business is divided into two separate areas – one for groceries and take-away, and the other for dine-in. When we entered, we were greeted with smiles and an Assalammualaikum, making us feel certain this restaurant is truly halal. There was only one waiter there, who looked to be diligently cleaning some of the tables where there were still many plates left from former customers. Friendly service which was quite standard time-wise, neither rushed nor slow. For starters we chose the samosa-like bamyanie perkie, and a chicken soup which was perfect for the chilly air of Melbourne in autumn. For mains we chose fesenjan – a chicken dish similar to semur or Indonesian stew, only slightly sour – and khoresh bademjan – a tomato flavoured lamb dish. Doogh – a tasty Persian yogurt drink – concluded our lunch today.
