Ayam Penyet Ria

I like this chain’s limited menu – Ayam Penyet Ria does a handful of Indonesian dishes like sayur asem (a vegetable based soup) or gado gado (veggies in peanut sauce) and does them quickly, cheaply, and well. The signature dish the place is named after – ayam penyet or ‘smashed chicken’ with rice – comes with only one piece each of cucumber, tempe or soybean cake, and tofu. However the star of the show, the smashed chicken portion, is a very decent size. Go easy on the sauce which is a very potent mix of belachan or shrimp paste and sambal (ground chilli). Happily it’s served to the side of the plate so you can add the amount you want to the rice as your taste buds deem appropriate. The simple and plain eatery has a homey feel and is packed with Indo students and the odd non-Indonesian customer.
