Student haunt Nelayan (literally ‘fisherman’ in Bahasa Indonesia) is a casual place that’s been around for years, and within walking distance from Swinburne university not far from where we live. Although you can order some items to cook from the menu (laminated and pinned to the wall), in classic “Indonesian eatery” style most people just ask for rice and lauk (side dishes) from the bain marie. They also provide snacks wrapped in plastic, such as crackers, chips and others, of the sort you can order from a street-side vendor in Jakarta. There is no table service and the decor is endearingly aging, but the food is tasty, authentic Indonesian grub at cheap prices. At this time of the year (December) when most overseas students have headed home for the summer, the customers were mainly locals ordering takeaway.
